The Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical series visible in the pattern of an uncurling fern and the arrangement of a pine cone. Using this as a starting point, MOS Architects partners Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample developed the plans for Element House-architecture for a new ecology. The high points of this “futuristic homes” project include independence from public utility services, strict LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) criteria and a limit of 1,500 square feet or less.
Opening today at the Museum of Outdoor Arts, 1000 Englewood Parkway in Englewood, EH is a display of the drawings, models, films and projections that make up the project. “The plan is to eventually build a prototype,” says Cynthia Madden Leitner, president and executive director of the Museum of Outdoor Arts. “The entire project is designed to be ‘off the grid,’ using sustainable material. The separate modules can be put together in a way that their interconnecting pieces can basically go on into infinity.”
Starting at 4:30 p.m., a panel discussion with Meredith and Sample will touch on green building initiatives, the Element House project, and their work with the Museum of Modern Art and the P.S. 1 gallery in New York. For more information, go to www.moaonline.org or call 303-806-0444.
