It’s concert season all over the Front Range, including at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, where the spirit of the music lives on this summer, not only on the outdoor stage, but in the galleries. Three music-inspired summer shows — Two Fisted Art Attack: Denny Dent Retrospective; Convergence: Painting with Music; and Live at the Fillmore East: A Photographic Memoir — all open tonight with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m.
The first records the antics of late performance-art pioneer Denny Dent, who inspired a whole new generation of artists following in his live-art footsteps, many of whom are included in the second, Convergence, a twenty-artist exhibition curated by Red Rocks fixture Keith “Scramble” Campbell in an effort to let the public in on the workings of a unique community of painters who like to ad-lib their paintings live.
“That’s living in the moment, right there,” explains artist Eric Matelski, whose work is included in Convergence. “A lot of artists are shy about showing people what it is that they do and how they do it. Performance art gives people that window to watch how artists paint and to see what their techniques are.
“But it’s also pure entertainment,” he continues. “For us, it’s an out-of-body experience — a good release of energy, without any time to over-analyze everything.”
