Denver Arts Week is back and once again provoking the question of why we need one. Similar to Denver Restaurant Week, which came about as a way to put culinary Denver on the national map, it’s all a matter of raising awareness of the city’s cultural stature among the natives and visitors alike, says Rich Grant of Visit Denver. “It’s amazing to me how many people living here don’t really know about First Fridays,” he points out, adding that anyone who hasn’t experienced the crowds in the Art District on Santa Fe during the monthly art walk there is truly missing out on an unrivaled urban experience.

Denver Arts Week, which runs today through November 13, is a way of saying, “Stop your moaning, Denver: Here’s what you’ve been missing!” To that end, the annual event’s two biggest cornerstones — tonight’s Know Your Arts First Friday Art Walk and tomorrow’s free Night at the Museums tour — promise to be bigger than ever; for instance, the City of Golden is jumping into the fray for the first time this year as part of the latter, featuring five attractions, from the spectacular and little-known American Mountaineering Museum to the Coors Brewery Tour, complete with free samples. And all week long, as part of the Denver’s on Stage segment, theater and dance groups will be offering special deals and performances. “It’s fall,” says Grant. “It’s time to think about indoor pursuits.”
