Mare Trevathan of Curious Theatre loves Circle Mirror Transformation, the comedy by Annie Baker that opens today at Curious; it’s her favorite production of the season.“It’s a play that’s told through the filter of an acting class, with theater themes,” explains Trevathan, an actor, director and theater-immersed person in her own right. But you don’t have to be part of the esoteric, behind-the-scenes theater world to enjoy this play.

“It’s very clever in the way that it sneaks up on you,” Trevathan says. “It’s accessible without being pandering, surprising and quirky, charming — and although most of these theater games are familiar to me and I get the reference point, it’s something that also translates to a broad audience.” And, she notes, the games further the plot: In a classic theater exercise, for example, one partner interviews the other about his life story, then improvises his perception of said story for the group. “Several stories are revealed that way in the play,” she notes. “It’s a clever way of getting the expositional backstory.”

The very human fun and games of Circle Mirror Transformation get under way at 8 p.m. tonight at Curious, 1080 Acoma Street, and continue Thursdays through Sundays, through February 26; for tickets, $18 to $42, visit www.curioustheatre.org or call 303-623-0524.

Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Jan. 20. Continues through Feb. 26, 2011
