Before they formed the Purple Fluid, Richard and Roman Kulwicki had rock and roll in their blood. Their father, of course, is the late, great Ricky Kulwicki, of Denver’s greatest rock-and-roll band, the Fluid. The two brothers hooked up with Orie Bender, Henry Solomon and Danny L’Episcopo and formed a band clearly inspired by all the garage rock and proto-punk bands beloved by Ricky. If these guys played one iota less than excellent, they wouldn’t be worth mentioning beyond their pedigree. Fortunately, that’s not an issue. Both the band’s forthcoming album and its appearance at both nights of the Pure Sunshine shows this weekend (Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26, at the Bluebird Theater), celebrating Kulwicki’s life, will prove that the boys and their compatriots are no novelty act, and certainly no fluke. Without a doubt, Ricky would be proud.
