Flea markets and farmers’ markets and craft sales have merged and morphed into outdoor markets where you can buy beautiful handmade treasures, clothing, antiques, jewelry and food ― and they’re all the rage in Denver these days. Although it’s rare to find this sort of mash-up market downtown, that dearth will be filled by the Urban Market, which opens today in Skyline Park, offering up a retail mix of everything under the sun along with live entertainment. Denver’s Biggest Bake Sale, a cancer fundraiser by Cookies for Kids, is a special feature of this inaugural market; flamenco guitarist Vincente will strum in the park starting at 5 p.m.
This is a low-key market with a homegrown vibe and a special emphasis on the arts and crafts aspect, notes event organizer Steven Wallis. “Everyone is friendly and nice, and we seem to appeal most to people who work downtown.”
The Urban Market will return this summer to Skyline Park, at Arapahoe Street and the 16th Street Mall, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month; the exceptions to that rule are July 21 and October 13, which will close out the season.
