While some of George Inai’s previous material sounded like what he described as “a Model T built by Toyota in a Mexican factory,” what he’s doing with A Curious Ghost is somewhat different than the gothic Americana-meets-Mexican folk he’s done in the past. On A Curious Ghost Part I, Inai takes a few cues from DeVotchKa’s more sprawling cinematic work, and at times injects a bit of playfulness in the vein of Tom Waits, which gives the four-song EP a similar sort of dusty, romantic feel. At just over eleven minutes long, the recording comes across somewhat like a soundtrack for a slightly bizarre short film steeped in grainy sepia tones. It’s so good, especially on songs like “Serenade to a Satellite,” that it leaves you wanting more. A lot more.
