Formed in 2002 in Perth, Australia, it didn’t take long for the now-U.K.-based Pendulum to garner notice from drum-and-bass lovers around the world. One of the group’s first releases, “Vault,” was used on a mix album by drum-and-bass guru J Majik, and Pendulum has since remixed tracks for the Prodigy and opened concerts for Linkin Park. Originally comprising Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen and Paul Harding, the act has changed its shape and sound over the past decade. With Ben Mount, Peredur ap Gwynedd and Kevin Sawka on board, the music has evolved from drum-and-bass to today’s fusion of heavy metal and electronica, and many of the band’s sets now include live instrumentation. The overall sound remains aggressive, brash and energetic; it’s like industrial metal with drum-and-bass (and now, of course, dubstep) influences. Pendulum plays Beta for a DJ set on Wednesday, August 10; locals Fury, Ishe and Sureshot will open for the global dynamos.
