“Carnival of Souls,” the lead track on this EP, with its ominous evocation of early, all-analog synth pop, would be perfect for a John Carpenter remake of the classic horror movie of the same name. From the sounds of it, Joey Wiley watched one too many weird science-fiction movies from the late ’60s and ’70s — films like Silent Running, Logan’s Run , Zardoz and Stalker — and they became embedded in his mind, just like commercials from the same era, with their unabashed cheesiness. Whatever happened, the melodic blips, beeps, samples and retro synth work, though different musically, recalls old Microphones albums. Eerie yet upbeat, like a pre-Chrome Damon Edge doing his version of disco.
