Everyone in Mister Heavenly comes from higher-profile bands, such as Man Man, Islands and Modest Mouse. But Ryan Kattner, Nicholas Thorburn and Joe Plummer decided to do something different with Mister Heavenly, their side project. Melding a ’50s pop aesthetic with musical darkness, the members of Mister Heavenly have become purveyors of what, perhaps jokingly, has been called “doom wop.” For a single tour, actor Michael Cera joined the band on bass and proved to be far more than adequate. But even though Mister Heavenly’s sense of humor is firmly in place in its songwriting, there’s nothing gimmicky about what can be heard on the quartet’s debut album, Out of Love.
