Denver hasn’t been short on film festivals in recent years, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t space for one more. 38 Films hopes to differentiate itself by mixing genres and letting 32 pros and amateurs display their short films together on one screen.
“We wanted to allow for a huge variety of filmmakers to show at once,” says event coordinator Michael Sharon. The diverse set of films will be screened in three ninety-minute blocks: The first will consist of narratives, followed by documentaries and experimental and music videos, and, finally, the more mature “after dark” films.
“It’s an open event the whole time, so you can come and go as you please,” notes Sharon. “That was really important to us.” Among the filmmakers are local professionals and teachers such as Chad Schnackel, Patrick Sheridan and Margaret Norwood, as well as plenty of students, including Sharon himself, who’s hoping to raise funding for his senior thesis project.
38 Films starts at 6 p.m. tonight at Casselman’s, 2620 Walnut Street. Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door. For information, tickets and a full schedule, visit www.38filmsdenver.com.
