Denver’s Vintage Theatre took on a major project when its members decided to take on Avenue Q: The Tony Triple Crown-winning adult musical featuring Muppet-like puppets, made from scratch with big, flappin’ dirty mouths, isn’t cheap to to stage, nor is it your everyday song-and-dance.

The actors actually wield the life-sized puppets that are the true stars of the show, portraying such real-life New York City super-urbanites as Lucy the Slut and Trekkie Monster the Internet porn fan. It’s laugh-out-loud, is-this-really-happening funny, with hilarious songwriting by Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon) and Jeff Marx.

Vintage playfully warns that Avenue Q is rated “WTF,” so don’t bring the kids — or the prudish — and expect Sesame Street. Shows continue through January 8; tickets are $25 to $35. For information and reservations, go to http://www.vintagetheatreproductions.com.
