Anyone who stuck around for the final act of the second night of 2011’s Titwrench Festival got to see something very different when Tulip Wars took the stage. At times the music felt like straight-ahead pop with a lot more depth; at others the band sounded like mid-’90s alternative-rockers who had missed the memo requiring them to dumb things down and stick to one sliver of a songwriting style. With shimmery, angular guitar work in one song and a more bluesy dynamic in another, Tulip Wars (due at the Larimer Lounge on Thursday, May 17) coheres around Tara Davis’s whispery yet strong vocals and a subtly versatile and evocative rhythm section. Named for an economic bubble of yesteryear, this band produces some smart tunes.
