Dillinger Escape Plan

, which joins the Locust and Your Enemies Friend at the Bluebird Theatre on Wednesday, March 3, has been called grindcore, hardcore, death metal, math metal and pretty much every other sonic descriptor this side of easy listening. And it’s no surprise. The band, anchored by guitarist Ben Weinman and drummer Chris Pennie, specializes in genre-splicing as complex as any experiment in a DNA lab, creating compositions that race headlong at a killing pace one moment, then slow to a trudge the next. The players have a fondness for knuckle-popping time-signature gymnastics, too, as well as lyrics that go to extremes as a matter of course: Take “Three for Flinching (Revenge of the Porno Clowns),” from the act’s self-titled 2000 disc, which offers sage advice via the couplet “Don’t think twice/Just point and shriek.” The person doing the yowling on the group’s most recent platter, the 2002 EP Irony Is a Dead Scene, was Mike Patton, a restless spirit who’s since wandered into other extreme projects, including Fantmas and Hemophiliac (catch the latter at the Boulder Theater on Friday, February 27). But current vocalist Greg Puciato has been on board for several years and is featured on the Escapists’ forthcoming platter, which is being previewed on the current tour. Attendees should expect stylistic switchbacks severe enough to separate shoulders, all performed with minimum subtlety and maximum aggression. In other words, it’s a not-so-simple Plan.
