Church Fire’s synth-heavy post-punk comes to the Ogden

For a couple of years, this band played out under the curious moniker Sew Buttons on Ice Cream. But last year, the duo of Shannon Webber and David Samuelson switched to the more ominous Church Fire (due at Herman’s Hideaway on Monday, April 22). Some may know Webber for her role in her other band, the political art-punk act Dangerous Nonsense. For this project, Webber’s singing is more melodic and buoyant as she dramatically dances along to upbeat yet oddly dark and moody synth-pop — only it’s more like French, synth-heavy post-punk from the early ’80s and lo-fi glitchy pop from the past decade, with a definite vibe of some clandestine after-hours roller-disco party. It’s the kind of music you could see Harmony Korine using in a movie about an electroclash art-terrorist band.
