Boulder-based artist Jen Lewin’s switched-on interactive works have been seen across the nation and on city streets, underfoot and overhead, lighting up parks and imaginations, singing Walt Whitman’s “body electric” to viewers who are compelled to touch and experience a kind of wonder. Whitman’s poetic phrase is the inspiration for Lewin’s exhibition It’s Electric, which opens tonight at the CU Art Museum with a public reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
Part of the museum’s ongoing ART/TEKNE summer series exploring the use of technology in art, It’s Electric comprises six interactive sculptural works that engage their audiences in various ways.
“Jen Lewin’s technologically mediated artwork is not only visually and sonically engaging, but also connects the viewer to a dynamic embodied experience,” says curator Lisa Tamaris Becker. That’s been proven time and again with installations that invite viewers to dance on lighted discs or set off reactions on woven-fiber video curtains. Surprises are no doubt in store in the CU show.
Visit and play with It’s Electric at the museum, located in the Visual Arts Complex on the University of Colorado-Boulder campus, daily except Sundays through July 27. Go to cuartmuseum.colorado.edu.
