Oh, Henry!

Named for theater impresario Henry Lowenstein, the Henry Awards honor the best work of the year: They are Denver’s version of the Tonys. The Colorado Theatre Guild organizes the voting process, while actors Jim Hunt and Josh Hartwell put the evening together, including the musical interludes — this year will see numbers from several nominated companies, including the big tap opening from the Boulder’s Dinner Theatre production of 42nd Street and a closing medley from the Town Hall Arts Center’s exuberant Hair.

The Arvada Center is this year’s venue, and artistic director Rod Lansberry is “making everything available to us: his sound and tech people, his stage manager,” Hunt says. “We just feel so welcome and supported.” Brian Mallgrave’s set for Curtains serves as the background: “It’s perfect. It looks like a vaudeville stage.”

There are always some disappointments, but “I think of it as an excuse for a big party,” says Hunt. “Being nominated is really cool, but this is about all of us.”

Cocktails and a silent auction begin at 6 p.m., while the awards ceremony takes place at 7 at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, 6901 Wadsworth Boulevard, in Arvada. Tickets are $25 or $50; call 720-898-7200 or visit coloradotheatreguild.org for more information.
