The genre-blurring work of Fort Collins quintet Finnders & Youngberg is so seamless on the band’s newest release, I Don’t Want Love You Won’t Give Until I Cry, that it’s easy to overlook the album’s impressive diversity of sound and structures. With Rich Zimmerman’s speedy mandolin and Aaron Youngberg’s equally rapid banjo, you’ve got textbook bluegrass on songs like “The Legacy,” a tune that could easily come from the playbook of Flatt and Scruggs. Erin Youngberg’s honeyed vocals on the ballad “Forever,” meanwhile, are heartfelt and direct enough to fit into a broadcast from the golden age of the Grand Ole Opry (Aaron’s work on pedal steel adds to that vintage-country feel). Then there’s Mike Finders’s guitar work on “Parallel,” a waltz straight from the American folk tradition. All in all, it’s hard to tell where these musical strains begin and end, and that’s an impressive achievement in and of itself.
