The holiday season is often called “magical” — and one big catalyst behind that magic is the sense of nostalgia that tradition evokes. Khyentse James is adept at harnessing that sense of nostalgic wonder: Her film-school studies, combined with several years of creating movie-worthy scenes, have made all of her events, including the annual 1940s White Christmas Ball, seasonal favorites for anyone who enjoys stepping into the past.
“With the scenes from all the different movies, it transports people back to their childhood and gets them excited,” James notes. “It’s not like you’re going to see a show, watch the show and go home. With this event, you get dressed up and spend weeks thinking about what you’re going to wear, and you’re actually stepping into this magical, lit-up holiday fantasy. You’re going into the set of the movie White Christmas and watching the characters come to life, dancing and meeting people and watching the scenes live, and you’re actually a part of it.”
This year features performances by rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson and Ebenezer Scrooge; you’ll see Hollywood pin-ups, have a chance to ride in an authentic sleigh from the 1940s era, dance under a canopy of lights next to Christmas trees and WWII airplanes and much, much more. Tickets start at $40, and the fun runs from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.; visit 1940sball.com/White_Christmas_Ball to purchase yours and to see a full schedule of events.
