The second annual Westword Whiteout, which gets under way at 7 p.m. tonight at the McNichols Building, will celebrate the season’s hottest fashions and Denver’s coolest designers. The signature event mixes live music, fashion-forward vendors and handcrafted cocktails, and concludes with a curated runway show featuring some of the town’s top designers, boutiques and models — including such big Denver-based fashion names as Mona Lucero, who not only designs one-of-a-kind garments, but also cheerleads for her community. “The fashion scene here is burgeoning, and that’s great. Fashion professionals need to support each other more, and the general community needs to buy,” Lucero says. “Then everything will get better. Quality of product and a real fashion industry will emerge.”
That industry will get a kick in the pants as Whiteout takes to the runway at McNichols, 144 West Colfax Avenue. Tickets are $45 to $75, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Transplant Foundation. “In the end, the most important thing to remember is the cause,” notes Lucero. “That’s more important than anything, and if all our models came out wearing plastic trash bags, it would be okay. I’d just make sure to style it really cool, of course!”
