Ivar Zeile of Plus Gallery says he’s never hosted an MFA thesis show before, though he’s undoubtedly had the opportunity. But there was something about the work of University of Denver grad student and adjunct professor Kristin Stransky — a combination of 3-D printing technology, digital imaging and interactive projects — that turned him around, along with a lofty recommendation from Plus artists and Stransky colleagues Chris Coleman and Laleh Mehran, who anchor DU’s Emergent Digital Practices program.

“There was enough of a spark there to make me want to consider it,” Zeile says. “And she really stepped over the edge: Though she’s an emerging artist, she isn’t at an emerging level, and she’s had some prior exhibition experience, including a show last year at Notre Dame, where she showed work side by side with Marilyn Minter.” But mainly, he admits, he was just blown away by what he saw and felt that he was witnessing something newer than new in this technologically driven era of modern art. So Plus Gallery’s first thesis show — Stransky’s common/myth — opened last week, featuring four installation components that use everything from medical imaging to motion-controlled interactivity to amaze and engage viewers.
