Reader support matters more than ever
We're in the final stretch of our summer campaign. Our goal is to raise $25,000 by August 9 to support the journalism our community relies on. Reader support is helping shape the future of local news.
Alek Komarnitsky is a man of many loves — his family first and foremost, but also photography (check out this great slideshow of dogs showing a coyote who’s boss), the Colorado Rockies (during this past baseball season, he displayed giant promotional baseballs the team used in 2000) and Christmas — hence the inclusion of his yuletide display in the December 2007 blog “Battle of the Griswolds.” But he loves other holidays as well, as proven by a crazy Halloween exhibition that users can control from their home computer. Go to his website after 5 p.m. and you can inflate — and deflate! — a wide range of blow-up characters, including Homer Simpson and SpongeBob SquarePants, on view thanks to a series of web cams.
Komarnitsky hopes to generate more than just smiles with his display. “This is the fifth year that I’m working with the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research to raise awareness and funds,” he notes via e-mail. “My two sons have this condition, so it’s personal for me.” Thus far, almost $40,000 has been generated for the cause by his assorted holiday displays. Still, he emphasizes that “the website continues to be completely free and totally fun, especially for kids.”
Maybe not for the Hulk, though. He looks pissed.
