Japan’s electronic-music scene remains a fanatical one, with a long history of genre-defining artists who could hold their own with any of their U.S. and U.K. counterparts. Japan’s scene is a bit more self-contained, though, and few of those artists, if any, manage to cross over and find success in the West. Satoshi Tomiie is the notable exception. Tomiie, now residing in NYC, began his house-music career back in 1989, in a collaboration with New York house legend Frankie Knuckles on a track called “Tears.” The song made the DJ a major player in the dance-music world, and it wasn’t long before some of the biggest names in pop music sought him out for remixes. An array of superstars from David Bowie to U2 to Mariah Carey have all received the remix treatment; Tomiie’s original tunes, meanwhile, have been reinterpreted by the likes of John Digweed.
