Broncos fans on the team’s season-tickets wait list get their annual consolation prize today: a chance to buy two-game packages (one of which has to be to a pre-season game) before the rest of the sweaty, beer-stained, orange-bleeding general public.

Beginning at 10 a.m., wait-listers in Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico who got a code in their email box yesterday will have “the opportunity” to spend hundreds of dollars (tickets are $45 to $125 each) to catch the team from what are typically third-level seats in one pre-season match and one game of their choice.

And who wouldn’t want to watch backup players from a mile high?

Still, “the opportunity” is a good one for fans. Face-value tix are usually difficult to come by before or after the season in this Broncos-crazed town. And, honestly, catching a pre-season game in August, when it’s still beautiful out and you can still wear shorts and a t-shirt, can be more pleasant than an ice-crusted showdown in November.

Denver, make your New Year’s Resolution Count!

We’re $17,500 away from our End-of-Year campaign goal, with just a five days left! We’re ready to deliver — but we need the resources to do it right. If Westword matters to you, please contribute today to help us expand our current events coverage when it’s needed most.

$50,000

But it’s going to be a tough decision for a lot of those wait-listers this year. The Broncos managed to lose their biggest star, quarterback Jay Cutler, and alienate their second biggest one, Brandon Marshall, leaving us with, um, Peyton Hillis?

Some things have to go in a recession, and Broncos tickets might be the first thing on the cut list. It’s a rebuilding year in this economy, for the Broncos and their fans.
