Even though Stephen Marley has been producing and performing music since 1978, it wasn’t until last month that he dropped his debut album, Mind Control. In the same vein as his brother Damian’s last album, Welcome to Jamrock (which Stephen produced), Control is a mix of dancehall, hip-hop and classic roots reggae. Stephen conjures the spirit of his father Bob Marley so convincingly on tracks such as “Chase Dem” and “Lonely Avenue” that you can’t help but wonder if this is what the patriarch would have sounded like in the year 2007. Embodying the “whole Marley vibe,” as Stephen put it in a recent phone conversation, this Friday night’s show will feature the two Marley brothers performing songs from Control alongside cuts from their legendary father’s catalogue. “It’ll be good vibes. It’s going to be a very uplifting show,” promised Stephen. Yeah, mon.
