No huge surprise that the vile homophobes at the Westboro Baptist Church are targeting this weekend’s Denver PrideFest event, since they announced a PrideFest protest in 2010. But while they’re in town, they also plan to picket…Drew Carey, host of The Price is Right, who’ll visit Saturday for a gig at the Comedy Works South. And both Carey and the WBC have sparred on Twitter.
As we’ve noted in past coverage, Westboro, ruled by evil scorpion Fred Phelps, doesn’t always show up for demostrations as promised/threatened. There’s reason to question whether they’ll do so in this case, too, since the hatemongers’ online schedule lists simultaneous protests on Sunday morning, June 17, at the PrideFest parade in Denver and a church in Seneca, Kansas — and fortunately, there aren’t that many of them. So the announcement about the Carey event may prove to be mere hot air. Still, the comic isn’t ignoring it. Here’s his first tweet on the subject.
Holy heck! The Westboro Baptist Church has my comedy show in Denver next week on their picket schedule. Jeez Louise.

Unamused was Rebekah Phelps-Davis, one of Fred’s thirteen children, who checked in with this from her own Twitter account.

Expect more gags like this one at Comedy Works South whether the WBC vermin turn up or not. In the meantime, here’s the Westboro announcement about Carey, transcribed from a faxed version that’s even loonier than the one on the WBC website.

Drew Carey is a classic worker of iniquity. He uses the platform God gave him to tout his favorite lies: that it’s okay to be gay, that God won’t punish you for your proud sins, and that it is evil to cleave to God’s standard of good. It is a treacherous thing that Carey does — and he does it against his own interest. God will repay him to his face!
Here are the facts: (1) Carey is a hater of Biblical proportions! “Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: though shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour & not suffer sin upon him.” (Lev 19:17). If he had any love for anyone, he wouldn’t be pushing you down the path to Hell with both of his grubby hands.
(2) Carey’s punishment in Hell for his hatred will be administered by the Jesus he blasphemes daily. “…he shall be tormented with fire & brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, & in the presence of the Lamb: & the smoke of their torment acendeth up forever & ever: & they have no rest day nor night.” (Rev 14:10-11)
With all he does, Carey mocks the servants of God & calls good evil, and evil good. Bad idea, Drew. “But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.” (2 Chron. 36:16). “Woe until them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness…” (Isa 5:20).
