Joseph Coniff, one of many talented graduates of the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design and a member of the Rule Gallery stable, typically creates deadpan sculptural works exploring the inner and perceived lives of readymade objects. But in his new show at Rule, (in parentheses), he takes a more refined path, rethinking the theme in the two-dimensional mediums of painting and printmaking.
The exhibition represents a new turn in the road in Coniff’s ongoing “Delineations” series. “With these particular paintings and prints, I boil the idea into an abstracted form,” he explains. “They are pretty much an abridged version of other bodies of work I’ve done. For me, personally, I feel it’s important to approach my art-making and practice as something always evolving. I try not to get too stuck doing one thing over a long course of time.”
At least one sculptural holdover will anchor the show when it opens tonight with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m., but you’ll also find serene, minimal, abstract works of acrylic and vellum on the walls.
