David Bowie’s fifty-year career has been full of twists and turns, so for David Bowie Is, a retrospective, the multifaceted musician provided items from his personal archive, including clothing, photographs and writing. To coincide with the traveling exhibition’s opening at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Sie FilmCenter, along with dozens of theaters across the country, will show Sound + Vision: David Bowie Is, a documentary about the show and about its curators at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

“With Bowie’s handwritten lyrics, there’s historical perspective given around what was going on at the time he wrote ‘Space Oddity’ and how he took inspiration from the moon landing,” says Ernie Quiroz, programming director for the Sie, citing one example from the collection. Seeing Bowie’s creative process through his writings and photographs will surely wow the most devoted fans, while those familiar with the artist’s iconic outfits — from his asymmetrical Ziggy Stardust ensemble to his dashing Thin White Duke era — can also revel in the display’s visual impact.

Sound + Vision: David Bowie Is screens for one night only at the Sie, 2510 East Colfax Avenue. Viewers are welcome to attend a Bowie pre-party happy hour starting at 5:30 p.m. in the lobby’s Henderson’s Lounge, with drink specials and music from boyhollow; the film rolls at 7. Tickets are $7 to $10; for more information, call 303-595-3456 or visit denverfilm.org.
