When film-goers get bored with Hollywood’s action-movie clichés and formulaic rom-coms, they have a thriving indie film scene to turn to, where innovative ideas can flourish. It’s no different in the world of games. When gamers find themselves tiring of the latest iteration of Call of Duty or yet another Mario title, they, too, can turn to a thriving, albeit much smaller, indie world. Local gamers can explore that world today at the Denver Indie Game Expo.
“What’s exciting about [it] is you’re going to see things here that you’ve never seen,” says Jet Ternlund, head of the local chapter of the International Game Developers Association. “You’re going to see new ideas that you’ve just never seen. That’s fun and exciting.”
Offerings will range from innovative phone-based games to cutting-edge virtual-reality ones. Everything from polished demos to concept art will be on display, showcasing the next wave of underground gaming — and with breakout indie hits like Minecraft making more gamers aware of the possibilities of the indie game scene, there’s never been a better time to jump in.
The expo starts at 1 p.m. at the Clutch Gaming Arena, 11651 West 64th Avenue in Arvada. Admission is just $5, but you must sign up online in advance to get in. For more info and to register, visit tinyurl.com/l4rppg4.
