“If David Sedaris had known then what we know now about how commercial the holidays have become, we would have thought he was a prophet when he wrote this,” says the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company’s Stephen Weitz, director of The Santaland Diaries.
Opening tonight at the Jones Theatre, Sedaris’s play takes the audience through a humorous first-person account of what it’s like to work as a Christmas elf at the mall. A newer favorite in the canon of holiday productions, Santaland is a cynical yet heartfelt look at a modern Christmas in America and the central role that shopping plays in it. But the BETC version comes with a twist: It will be presented as a period piece set in the ’90s, when Sedaris wrote it. As with any event that’s included in Off-Center@The Jones programming, there will also be a bar, festive decor and interactive components to make the evening unique.
The Santaland Diaries, starring Matt Zambrano in the role of Crumpet the Elf, opens tonight and runs through December 24. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at denveroffcenter.org, at 303-893-4100 or at the door (though advance purchase is recommended).
