“Someone once told me that God gives you an imagination and creativity, and that’s his gift to you. What you do with it is your gift to him.” That’s how artist Angel Espino, the creative mind behind Espino Arte, describes his work and his new show, Art for Water, which will benefit Water for People, an international nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that people in underserved regions can build and maintain their own safe water systems. Giving back to the community is important to Espino, which is why he regularly donates both artwork and proceeds from the sale of his art to local charities. He chose to raise money for Water for People after his girlfriend introduced him to the organization.
“I was interested in Water for People because the more I learned, the more it opened my eyes to the facts,” Espino says. “Two-thirds of the world’s population doesn’t have running water, and that’s something we take for granted every day. This inspired me to push toward something that can make a big impact.”
Although Espino’s expressionist drip paintings have been hanging in the Mike Wright Gallery for nearly eight months, tonight he’ll be showcasing his work for the cause: Forty percent of all sales — including proceeds from a collectors’ pre-sale and a silent auction — will be donated directly to Water for People.
