Artopia, Westword‘s annual celebration of art, culture and fashion, returns to City Hall on February 21. In addition to plenty of visual artists and the Whiteout fashion show, the event will feature some highlights from Colorado’s music scene — this year, over a dozen groups and artists will perform on four stages.

We’re checking in with several of those artists about the state of Denver’s scene and what you can expect next Saturday. Today: DJ AWHAT!!, who will perform in City Hall’s Main Room.

Westword: How did you get into music/performing?

DJ AWHAT!: I’ve been a fan and heavily involved in the Denver hip-hop scene for close to twenty years now, and I’m just a b-boy at heart who loves the culture. I’ve been DJing fifteen years and started out like most people as a fan first and music lover. I’ve DJed for a handful of local artists and groups here in Denver scene: The Pirate Signal, Prana, and now Stay Tuned.

Editor's Picks

How do you describe your music/work?

I particularly enjoy playing every thing from hip hop to soul/funk and sum sub sonic beat music. I like to incorporate my attitude, excitement, and skills in all my sets I rock. And have fun of course.
What should people know about what you’ll be performing at Artopia?

Not quite to sure but most likely sum hard soul/funk for all to get funky wit it.
What’s your favorite thing about the Denver art/music scene?

My favorite thing about our scene is watching it mature, and seeing artists get better and our access to outlets expand and grow.

What is the one thing that could improve the art/music scene?

To be honest I’m not sure. Maybe just giving access to play at more different types of venues.
Anything else you would like to add?

Yes! Definitely check out the new Stay Tuned EP plus any and all LIFE Krew releases in the future. Peace, Dj AWHAT!
