Our restaurant critic Gretchen Kurtz reviewed Kings BBQ last July, noting that its off-the-beaten-path location was a good sign. Of the smokehouse’s brisket, she professed true affection: ” That dish was love spelled m-e-a-t, with the chewy black edges called bark, the telltale pink smoke ring, and chunks of beef so tender, even a baby could’ve gummed them.”
But it seems that Kings was just a little too tucked away in its shopping center location across from a Walmart; the phone is disconnected and the place is closed. Denver’s barbecue scene seemed to be gathering momentum, so the loss of a good pit master seems a shame. The space has seen previous barbecue joints come and go, so we’ll keep our eye on it to see if there’s more good ‘cue in its future.
