It’s an indication of Denver’s Broncos-craziness that on a day when Patrick Roy blindsided hockey fans everywhere by abruptly resigning as the coach of the Colorado Avalanche and local heroine Missy Franklin continued her Olympics swoon in Rio, the Super Bowl champs’ pre-season opener against the Chicago Bears was easily the top local sports story – and maybe the top story, period.
Then again, there’s an uncommon amount of intrigue surrounding the squad thanks to the battle for the quarterback position previously held by the now-retired Peyton Manning. The man expected to take the helm was Mark Sanchez, best known for the infamous butt fumble, but he’s been locked in an unexpectedly tight competition with second-year pro Trevor Siemian – and top draft pick Paxton Lynch still hasn’t been officially ruled out.
Last night’s 22-0 Denver win over the Bears in Chi-Town hardly clarified the situation. Sure, Sanchez, who started the game, threw an interception, because that’s what he does – but he also hurled a sweet touchdown to Demaryius Thomas and otherwise looked both confident and competent. Then again, Siemian acquitted himself quite well, too, and Lynch hinted at the reasons that John Elway and company see him as the QB of the future.
Granted, the Broncos’ defenders were the real stars of the game – the defensive unit impressed mightily even without Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware and Aqib Talib taking part – and the Bears, under the command of ex-Broncos head coach John Fox, appear to be somewhere in the vicinity of terrible. But the dominating performance still had some fans thinking Denver can win another championship with Sanchez under center.
