Restaurateurs took a breather in mid-January; this has been one of the quietest weeks for openings in some time. But the same can’t be said for closings – at least in Boulder. Emmerson, which opened with big ambitions in August 2017 in the former home of Lyfe Kitchen at 1600 Pearl Street, is now closed. Initially open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it offered inventive cuisine, housemade breads and pastries, and a novel cocktail program (the drinks menu was literally a graphic novel). At the end of 2017, we named the eatery one of the best new restaurants of that year. But that was then…

Also in Boulder, the longstanding Rio Grande restaurant is closed – sort of. The physical space at 1101 Walnut Street is dark while it’s being remodeled, but the Rio Grande is still serving its potent margaritas and Tex Mex food at 1701 Pearl Street (the old home of Ted’s Montana Grill, which closed earlier this month) until renovations are finished.

Here’s our complete list of restaurant and bar openings and closings for the week of January 14-20, 2019, plus links to coverage of recent and upcoming openings and closings.
