Whether you love horror or opera, you’ll be happy to know that Opera Colorado will perform the Colorado premiere of The Shining.
Based on Stephen King’s novel, the opera is part of the company’s 2020-2021 season, alongside Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Georges Bizet’s Carmen.
Opera Colorado also announced its 2019-2020 season, which includes Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville (November 2 to 8, 2019), Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (February 27 to March 1, 2020) and Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca (May 2 to 10, 2020).
The new shows are happening in part because Opera Colorado, which has been selling out performances, has its largest subscriber base in decades and just received an anonymous $1 million donation. All that comes as good news for a company that was having to cut entire productions in recent years and shrink its season from three operas to two.
“We are so pleased to say that Opera Colorado is bucking the national downward trend for subscription rates, and we are immensely grateful to Denver audiences for embracing this larger-than-life art form and the works we present,” says Opera Colorado general and artistic director Greg Carpenter in a statement.
Subscriptions for the 2019-2020 season are on sale at the Opera Colorado website.
