The city’s been collecting ideas for the first round of funding from the Downtown Development Authority, which could pour over half a billion dollars into projects. Inspired by that big pot of money, people are proposing everything from gondolas to new apartments to now, a tall tower with an observation deck at 1546 California Street, which is currently a vacant lot.
While the plan submitted this week describes the concept simply as “a 673′ tall observation ‘Spiral Tower’ feature. With new supporting structure/building on first floor,” readers flesh out that description in their comments on the Westword Facebook post reporting on the proposal. Says Alan:
Blucifer approves!
Suggests Larry:
Sounds like some architect or developer has an edifice complex. Something like this is strictly a vanity project. Only on paper will anyone be able to see the piece in its entirety. From street level it will look like a bedazzled vibrator.
Adds Mark:
What a phallic symbol! They will have to get a variance because it exceeds the height restrictions, plus it blocks my view of the mountains. And aren’t our mountains the best visual to look at in our state (and these comments also pertain to the Bridge to Nowhere on the Capitol grounds).
Offers Ed:
Tower of Babel.
Notes Misty:
Looks like a giant paper-towel holder.
Wonders Chris:
When did asking for monorails go out of style?
Observes Jeff:
Looks like Festivus for the rest of us.
Responds Eric:
Now it’s time for the airing of grievances to Denver City Council and the Mayor.
Concludes Derrick:
Looks like a waste of money. They need to invest in three things:
Health care (including drug treatment)
Housing (rent freeze, please)
Education (job/skill training)
