Several new cannabis stores opened and two award-winning medical dispensaries added recreational sales this August and September in Denver, but the good news was marred by a handful of popular dispensaries that closed for good.
Longtime dispensaries continued to shutter as wholesale cannabis prices tied their record low this summer. Casualties included L’Eagle, a pillar of Quivas Street for over fifteen years, and Verde, another skunky stalwart of Denver’s cannabis scene. Both stores exemplified Mile High marijuana at their peaks: L’Eagle’s penchant to grow Sour Diesel and other timeless strains like Bruce Banner, U.K. Cheese and OG cuts also helped me discover unique cuts like Texas Hash Plant, which might make a light bulb go off for people who burned in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Verde also had a stable of classics, including Super Lemon Haze and Purple Kush, as well as newer hits like Disco Belts and Roasted Garlic Margy.
ACA (formerly known as A Cut Above), a longtime dispensary frequented by dispensary shoppers who loved good ole-fashioned flower, closed its doors in August. Rumors have swirled around ACA’s closing and preceding name change, but all that remains right now is an empty store on South Broadway.
The summer did end with some high notes, however. Higher Grade, a local three-store chain with a recreational and medical store in the Golden Triangle, opened its two medical-only dispensaries to recreational customers earlier this month. Known for growing some of the better in-house flower in Denver with a strong hash selection to boot, Higher Grade’s choice to add two more quality dispensaries to the shopping map certainly doesn’t hurt.
Meadows, a brand new dispensary, opened in the Washington Park neighborhood, while Native Roots added another store to its long list of locations in July. Fired, a new-but-growing chain of marijuana stores founded by the former Green Dragon owners, opened a new dispensary in Athmar Park in September.
