King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard is on top of the world right now.
Perhaps the world’s best contemporary rock group, the band is riding high off a successful year touring its 27th album, Phantom Island, alongside orchestras across North America and debuting its music festival, Field of Vision, in Buena Vista.

Ahead of this year’s festival, frontman Stu Mackenzie told Westword that Colorado is a particularly special place for the group. “I love Colorado,” he said. “It’s obviously incredibly beautiful, and it’s funny – as an Australian, I feel quite at home there. It’s weird because we don’t have the mountains like you do, but I think we share an outdoorsyness. There’s a synergy there where I’ve always felt very at home in Colorado.”
There was a notable tragedy at the festival, with devoted fan Matt Gawiak passing away from cardiac arrest, and King Gizz dedicated “Float Along – Fill Your Lungs” to him and his family on the final night of the festival. That, as well as the rest of the event, underscored the band’s commitment to its fans, known as the Weirdo Swarm.
