More people, more problems…traffic problems, that is.
A northern Colorado town recently named the state’s biggest boomtown has just earned another title: the home of Colorado’s worst drivers.
The Town of Windsor has the highest rate of traffic incidents per 1,000 drivers, according to a LendingTree report released on December 11. The company analyzed Colorado cities based on insurance reports involving car accidents, speeding tickets and impaired driving offenses from January through September of 2025.
Windsor wound up with 23 incidents per 1,000 drivers, according to the report. That incident rate is five times higher than in Centennial, the city with the best drivers in Colorado.
Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $23,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
Windsor’s traffic troubles could be due to the influx of new residents unfamiliar with the local roads. The boomtown’s population has doubled in the last ten years, reaching a projected 43,000 in 2025. One of the new residents is U.S. Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, who herself was busted for speeding nearly 20 miles per hour over the limit on Vail Pass in the summer of 2024.
Here are the five Colorado cities with the worst drivers, based on the LendingTree report:
- Windsor — 23.0 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Greeley — 20.2 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Brighton — 19.8 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Thornton — 18.1 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Erie — 17.8 incidents per 1,000 drivers
Here are the five cities with the best drivers:
- Centennial — 4.6 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Highlands Ranch — 5.8 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Lakewood — 6.2 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Boulder — 9.5 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Arvada — 10.3 incidents per 1,000 drivers

The report also analyzed Colorado’s traffic incidents by the age of the drivers involved. Drivers from Generation Z were found to have the highest rate of incidents by far, more than doubling the incident rate of the second-place Millennials:
- Generation Z (born 1997 to 2012) — 61.4 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Millennials (born 1981 to 1996) — 23.2 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Boomers (born 1946 to 1964) — 18.7 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Silent Generation (born 1928 to 1945) — 18.1 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Generation X (born 1965 to 1980) — 16.2 incidents per 1,000 drivers
The results are more mixed when looking at Colorado’s traffic incidents based on the brand of the vehicles involved. According to the report, the state’s best drivers ride in luxury vehicles like Cadillacs and Buicks, and muscle cars like Pontiacs and Dodges:
- (Tie) Pontiac — 13.0 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- (Tie) Buick — 13.0 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Cadillac — 15.2 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Dodge — 17.6 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Saturn — 17.7 incidents per 1,000 drivers
Meanwhile, the state’s worst drivers apparently prefer Rams and Teslas:
- Ram — 29.1 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Tesla — 27.7 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Mazda — 27.6 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Acura — 27.3 incidents per 1,000 drivers
- Lexus — 26.5 incidents per 1,000 drivers
