It’s the end of the chapter for Petals & Pages, a queer women-owned independent bookstore and a popular spot for events, readings and gatherings in the Art District on Santa Fe since 2023.
On March 30, the store at 956 Santa Fe Drive announced on Instagram that April 12 would be its last day open.
“Previously scheduled events will continue, but our last day of regular store hours will be on the 12th,” the post reads. “In the time we’ve been open, we’ve gotten thousands of queer books into the hands of the people who’ve needed them the most, and have become more than just a bookstore. We’ve connected with our community in the most transformative way and we will always be grateful for that.”
The post also urges readers to keep supporting other indie bookstores in Denver, like West Side Books and Denver Book Rack.
Petals & Pages originally opened as a bookstore and flower shop. In December, it hosted the book launch for Begin Where You Are, Colorado’s first poetry anthology with writing by the state’s first ten poets laureate.
This has been a tough time for bookstores in Denver, with Tattered Cover being acquired by Barnes & Noble, and controversy marring the opening of the Denver Book Society. But at least a new bookstore is opening this week: the Little Blue Pigeon in Larimer Square.
