What do a lesbian mother, a narcissistic Midwestern beauty-shop owner, a mother haunted by infanticide, and a woman who believes she’s murdered her own imagination have in common? Well, each has something to say about modern life, from suburban sprawl to constraining social norms.
Using four one-act plays as its framework, Just Pretend Everything Is Perfectly Normal takes on the relationships between mothers and daughters while deconstructing the changing roles of women in society, among other things. According to director Angela Astle, “The overarching theme of the evening is the societal expectations in mother-daughter relationships and how that has changed over the years. But each of these pieces is unique enough that there’s something in there for everyone.” The play opens tonight at 8 p.m. at the Playwright Theatre, 2119 East 17th Avenue, and runs through July 29.
