There’s nothing new about a two-person exhibit; galleries host them all the time. But Bleached, a joint show at CORE New Art Space featuring Cal Duran and Claudia Roulier, offers a refreshing variation on the concept. For this “solo two-man show,” as Roulier calls it, the duo became a kind of two-headed installation monster. Both follow the muse of the carnival underworld, populated by circuses and sideshows; for Bleached, Roulier explains, they settled on an installation of “mostly ceramics, with some white things to pull it all together.” Also included: a few well-placed antique objects and some of Roulier’s paintings.

But just as the exhibit isn’t a typical two-artist show, neither is their “installation” a traditional construct. “Everyone is doing installations now,” Roulier says. So they decided to forgo gadgets and gizmos for something more organic and deconstructed, without pedestals or pretense, and set the resulting environments to a loose fiction. “We thought, ‘Let’s write a poem, a story, a ditty about some of our characters in relation to the theme and post it around with various pieces, like a little story that ties the viewer to the art in a different way.’”

Wander through like Hansel and Gretel at the circus when Bleached opens today at CORE, 900 Santa Fe Drive; the show continues through May 22, and artists’ receptions take place from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow for First Friday and again on May 18. For details, visit www.corenewartspace.com.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: May 5. Continues through May 22, 2011
