The Adventure Film Festival marks its tenth anniversary this weekend at the Boulder Theater, and its fifth year without founder Johnny Copp, who died in a 2009 climbing accident.

“We were digging through our archives because of the anniversary and found Johnny’s original vision for the festival that he scratched down in his notebook, and we all realized that the vision he had at the time is exactly what Adventure Film is today: a community-driven film festival that is all about the power of storytelling,” says festival spokeswoman Abbey Smith. “It’s pretty cool that it continues on with the support of his friends and family: We’re all still involved, and many of us have been from the beginning. And it’s even cooler to see it still be growing every year.”

This year’s festivities kick off with a free Community Night party tonight at 7 p.m. at the Patagonia store, 1212 Pearl Street in Boulder, and a free Adventure Street Fair on Friday in front of the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street, at 4 p.m. Film screenings start Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 3:30 p.m. There’s even a free kids’ show at noon Saturday. Full festival passes are $55 at adventurefilm.org, with single-day passes starting at $30 and individual show tickets for $15.
The festival also features a series of Adventure Film School workshops beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Impact Hub Boulder; register at adventurefilmschool.com.
