The Molly Brown House Museum has been all dressed up for the annual Halloween scary-story extravaganza, Victorian Horrors, for a few weeks now — and so director Andrea Malcomb thought it just made sense to keep that spirit alive for this year’s Night at the Museums offering, an All Souls’ Irish Wake. “Halloween was a great Victorian tradition,” Malcomb points out, “and Margaret and J.J. Brown were Catholic, so for them, a wake would have been a normal event in their lives. We wanted to showcase their Irish roots, and it’s a great opportunity to have the coffin in the house and take on the intertwining of their Irish heritage and Halloween.”
Malcomb notes that there aren’t many opportunities to visit the museum at night, and with mourners throughout the house celebrating the life of the dearly departed, this is a unique chance to check out the Brown house in all its Victorian splendor. “It’s a great way to get a glance at the house itself, see the spaces and hear some of the stories,” she adds. “Night at the Museums is such a fun, enticing event, to hop on a bus for free and travel around the city and experience the culture.”
