From the slumping economy to the war in Iraq, there are plenty of reasons to grumble. However, if you live in or near the mountains, pine beetles and their red carnage are probably high on your list. Today starting at 10 a.m. on Main Street in Frisco, BeetleFest is your chance to offset the bad with a little education and zany fun.

“Instead of grumbling about it, we decided to embrace what’s happening,” says Tim Bock, Frisco marketing and communications director. The wide-ranging events include three live bands (including a Beatles cover band), a painted VW “Slug Bug” that you can help smash with a sledgehammer, a costumed bike race, signature brews by Backcountry Brewery, chocolate-covered bugs, vendors selling beetle-kill furniture, a bug petting zoo and awareness training from the Friends of Dillon Ranger District.

Admission is free. For more information, call 1-970-668-9120 or go to www.evilpinebeetle.com.
