“I’m from back in the day, as the expression goes,” explains Skip Reeves, host of KUVO-FM’s Saturday-night show “A Funk Above the Rest.” That’s why Reeves doesn’t consider ’70s R&B to be “old-school”; according to him, it’s the first school.
“Many upbeat people from back in the time actually see that I could be starting some kind of a movement or resurgence to bring that music back to the fore,” he adds. “To see Denver as a city where funk could actually have a sort of rebirth — that’s a mouth-opener for a lot of people.” So shut that slack jaw, because it’s all happening right here and now — not only because of Reeves’s radio show, but also thanks to funk jam sessions such as the First School of Funk showcases at Jazz@ Jack’s.
And Reeves has had nothing but positive feedback on his sessions so far: “It’s been tremendous,” he says. “It is my purpose to keep it a very high-class affair. You walk away feeling good.”
