Romance and mad science make for strange bedfellows, but what else would you expect from David Cronenberg? When he remade a schlocky, ’50s B-movie The Fly into a modern masterpiece, he put his own spin on both the terrors of science and the relationship at the movie’s center, with gruesome results on both ends. Part of that was his signature brand of body horror, but part of it was the genius casting.
“Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum were a real-life couple at the time, and I think that’s partly why it works so well,” explains Theresa Mercado of the Cruel Autumn horror series at Crash 45. “It’s a very sexual movie, with some animalistic love scenes, and they feel really natural because of their real-life relationship.”
That blend of sex, romance and stomach-churning horror made the film a perfect selection for this season’s Killer Couples theme. Watching Goldblum turn into a goopy human/fly hybrid wouldn’t be half as disturbing if not for the real chemistry and emotion he and Davis share onscreen as it happens, she says.
