Nederland santera Catherine Robles Shaw usually sticks to the basics when creating her lovely retablos — plaques depicting the saints that are hand-carved and painted in a folk style that’s been handed down over hundreds of years in northern New Mexico and Colorado’s San Luis Valley. Contemporizing the old art is nothing new, as Jerry Vigil proved with his infamous Best of Denver-winning Westword cover-muerto in Colorado Rockies regalia in 2007.
But what’s good for the Rockies is apparently good for the come-from-behind Donkeys, too — as the following photo reveals.
