Painter Ashley Williams works in Nederland and sculptor Sarah Williams is based in Chicago, but as sisters growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, their imaginations were as intertwined as roots in a primeval forest of trees. That included a shared fascination with natural disasters, fed by photographs in old magazines.

Fast forward to the present, where the Williams sisters will reprise and further explore that innocent childhood preoccupation in The History of Weather, a joint exhibition opening today at Gildar Gallery. Through a combination of mixed-media sculpture that emulates the wear of time over eons and paintings of roiling black cloud shapes, the sisters explore the unchangeable and absolute force of nature and its unstoppable effect on civilization.
